Im getting a puppy, how do I begin to train her??? She’s 6 weeks old and will be coming home 2morrow — ?
NO CLUE how to train her to go to the bathroom for starters. She’s pretty small, (and fat – haha) and I want her to sleep with my husband and I for a while, at least until we get her a dog house and it warms up outside. Who knows maybe she’ll just always sleep in side…..is that confusing to the dog??
Goodness….so how do I train her to go the bathroom outside?? Should I just let her out at 7:00AM every morning when I wake up??? And that will be our ‘routine’ ??? And should I take her to formal training?? or start on my own??? Are there any good tutorials out there for me?? I dont want to screw up this dog lol — Thanks
Congratulations on getting a dog. It’s good that you want to be prepared for caring for it.
The most important thing to do with your puppy is to put him on a schedule, for going outside, eating, etc.. Take your dog out first thing in the morning when you wake up. Then when you feed him, take him out about 1-2 hours after he eats. If you go anywhere, make sure you take your dog out before you go, and again when you come home. When you feed him in the late afternoon, take him out again about 1-2 hours after he eats. Then take your dog out for the last time right before bedtime. Also, make sure you put down some newspaper or pee pads in an area that will be familiar to your dog, because there may be times that your dog can’t hold it and he will need a place to go to the bathroom.
Also, puppies are usually fed 2 times a day. It’s good to feed your dog on a schedule too.
Dogs are creatures of habit. They prefer to be on a schedule because they learn when it’s time to go out, eat and sleep. Dogs are smart, and they learn fast, so it should not take long to get your dog trained if he is on a schedule. Also, whenever your dog goes to the bathroom outside, or when he goes on the pee pads, always make sure you praise him. Positive reinforcement is also a good way to train your dog.
Best of luck with your dog. Hope I helped.
