I need help house training my puppy?

I adopted a puppy from a shelter a few months ago and I am having trouble house training him. I have had dogs in the past and crate training has always worked with them, but not with this dog. The main problem is, despite sleeping there, he often pees in his crate. He knows he is supposed to go outside, but when I am not around he will pee in his crate and often sleep in it if nobody in my house cleans it up right away. We’ve tried puppy pads, but he rips them up. He is almost 7 months old and I feel he should almost be old enough to be allowed in the house unsupervised, but I can’t do that until I am sure he will be mostly accident-free. Does anyone have any tips on how to stop him from peeing in his crate?

Put his nose in it! Let him know that it is unacceptable! We did that with our puppy and she is potty trained now. (She is 5 1/2 months old! and was 2 months when we got her) Another good method is to keep them on a schedule. Maggie, my Boston, know that in the morning she goes potty then eats and goes potty#2 in about 5-10 min. then at 10:30 she goes potty again, at 12:00 she goes potty again and then after she eats, And so on! She knows when her potty times are and it helps her a lot.

After you put their nose in it and spank them, remember they are just like a kid, take them outside and tell them go potty. . . .I know they just went but this helps them to know that it is wrong in the house and that is where they are supposed to go.

They also say that if you don’t feed or let your dog drink after 7 they won’t have to go.

Good Luck!!
