Is feeding my puppy Milkbone and Alpo treats OK?

I have a four month old puppy and his main food is Canidae. But I have a box of Milkbone Flavored Snacks and Alpo Variety Snaps that I give him as treats. Is that ok? I know they’re crap, but hey, they’re just snacks, right? I probably give him about 3-5 of either each day. I cut them into little pieces and use them for training and occasionally throw one in his crate when he’s in it. I have used carrots, but he threw up. Treats run fast, and they were conveniently on the grocery store shelf so I got them. He loves them, but I’d like to know if there will be any noticeable side effects for doing this.

Both have nasty ingredients. I personally avoid both. Having one here and there is fine (like when I take my dog to the petstore, they give her a biscuit like those when we check out), but I wouldn’t give them on a regular basis.

Think of it this way, if you had a child, would you give them 3-5 candybars a day for snacks? Or would you rather give them 3-5 pieces of fruit? Candy-bars are the human-equivalent of those treats.

If you would rather feed the healthy snack (like feeding your child the pieces of fruit), go with higher-quality biscuits.

Here are some good ones, they’re meaty and have great ingredients:

** Remember, treats and biscuits should not make up more than 10% of your dog’s total diet. **
