puppy training separation
What are some good ways to make my future puppy not have separation anxiety?

Hi , I’m just doing some research before i get a puppy most likely this summer. I was just wondering what some good ways to train the puppy to not have separation anxiety? And once summer is over and i go back to work(teacher), should I put the puppy in its crate while I’m not there? All day?

Hopefully will be a whippet

Whippet pups are bundles of mischief so a safe method of confinement is needful and having a “safe area’ while you are gone makes the dog feel safer too – keeping in mind that no pups can hold their bladder 8 hrs and Comfort makes the whippets world go round. A “dog room”full of pet beds or an x-pened off area and a kennel run with dog door in between are common arrangements. dogwalkers at lunch or you returning at lunch to let them out could suffice..
As for the separation anxiety – make sure from THE DAY puppy comes home you leave him in the safe area for at least a few minutes EVERY DAY while you walk out to mailbox, drive to grocery store ect. don’t make a huge fuss when you leave OR when you come back and provide a distracting bone or kong stuffed with squeeze cheese or peanut butter…. plenty of exercise so pup is TIRED and wanting a nap when you leave is a good idea too.
