puppy training school
After years of puppy training school my beagle (3 years old) still begs under the table during dinner..help?

We feed her before we eat but she will eat her dinner and then come sit under our dinner table. How do i teach her not to.

we haven’t been able to train her to do anything even after taking her to puppy school for the first year of her life.

OK, first of all, you are feeding her before you eat your dinner? Bad idea. I always try to answer these questions based on books or documentaries I have seen myself. On this one though, I am going to use an example from a great Disney movie I recently watched, and I am sure a lot of people have seen, but they may not have understood what was going on. The movie I refer to is “Eight Below.” Yeah the movie with the huskies that get left in Antarctica for nearly 6 months and most of them survive. There is a scene when they had been there for a few days and they go out hunting for the first time. At this time, there are seven dogs, and the female (I am sorry but I forgot her name) she shows that she is the alpha. She leads the attack as she charges into a flock of birds and they fly right to the rest of the pack with the exception of what that had gotten in trouble and had to stay behind. The point to this comes after the hunt. The pacj returns, each carrying a bird, and they all take the birds to the alpha female, and drop them at her feet. She has her choice of what she wants. Once she starts eating, the rest of the pack files in, picks a bird and goes off to eat in peace. Do you see where we are going here. The alpha eats first, then everyone below the alpha. NOw lets translate this to your problem.

You have a 3 yr old beagle, that you are feeding before you, she sits there “begging.” First of all, she is not understanding why you are eating when she as not eaten all she wants. She things she is the alpha. So from now on, do not feed her until after dinner. Now lets look at the “begging” issue. A lot of people email me all the time asking how to correct beggingand the truth is, the dog isn’t even begging. IF the dog is sitting there watching you eat, then that is acceptable. However, if she is there and she is whining and carrying on, then that is actual begging. If she is just watching you, then there isn’t a problem, if she is whining, then the changing of who eats first should help to resolve this issue. Remember, the dog doesn’t eat before you do!!!
