AmStaff pup, I have limited funds & never raised a pup b4. Low cost supplies and vet care? Richmond, Va.?
Freind gave me an AmStaff puppy. She is adorable and we already love each other. I’ve never raised a puppy before. She needs vet care, ears cropped, crate, supplies, and training. She is 8 weeks old. I am always broke and need to find a way to get her everything she needs. Any advice?
Yes. ear cropping is not necessary. One vet bill down. As tempting as it is to avoid vet bills in the beginning, I can promise you that would not be wise. Money you save now could translate into costly emergency vet bills later. So get all the vaccinations the vet reccommends. But, if you are not sure somethign the vet wants to do is necessary, do not hesitate to say that you’re a little short on money and would only like to do they very basics. He will usually understand and plan his reccommendations accordingly.
For a crate, you can ask around and see if anyone has an old one they no longer need. Supplies do not have to be expensive, a leash a collar and two bowls should do for now, and then later on a brush and doggy shampoo. Your biggest expense will be food.
For the training, try it on your own at first. Doggy treats can be used for this, but in a crunch pieces of dog food may be acceptable. I’m sure there are websites that explain basic training methods. It is not always necessary to go to a training class, unless you feel it would help your stubborn dog. If you do go to one, I took my dog to one at PetSmart.
The only thing you need to know about raising a puppy is to be firm, and know your rules and stick to them no matter how sad your puppy’s eyes get. Think about this now: what rooms of the house is she allowed in, and is he allowed on furniture? How about begging at the table? That plus love and patience and long walks and those are all free! Good Luck with your puppy!
