Crate training for a puppy is not cruel. It will keep the dog safe while you are training it. When the dog is safe and potty trained you can leave the door to the crate unlatched at all time. Unfortunately I have found that training stops because the owners get lazy and just leave the dog in the crate to avoid bad behavior. This is the cruel part. Good behavior is praised and bad behavior is corrected, not avoided. So you should attend puppy classes and then on to obedience classes and you will have a great pet, one that is safe and reliable. I mostly have dachshunds and they need training.
