Puppy potty training question?

Well I am getting a puppy pretty soon and I was wondering since I will be at school all day what is the best way to potty train her? I read up on all that potty training stuff but since I will be gone most of the day should I put a puppy pad in her kennel/playpen? Also if she sleeps wiht me at night then will that interfear with her learning to potty outside? I really don’t know because when we got my other dog he was already trained. Can you help me with tips on potty training her as fast as possible since I will be gone all day at school? Thanks.

Housebreaking In A Hurry

The Five Things You Must do to Housebreak Any Dog In A Hurry

Every professional dog trainer knows that there are five keys to succesfully
housebreaking your dog. Ignore any of these five keys and you’ll be dooming
yourself to many extra months of housebreaking misery.

1.) Correct the dog any time he has an accident in the house. Keep him confined
to either a crate, or a dog run outside when you can’t supervise him.

2.) Praise the dog anytime he eliminates outside.

3.) Establish a specific spot, and a command you repeat (such as “Get busy!”)
while you’re waiting for him to eliminate outside.

4.) Set up a rigorous feeding and watering schedule, and take him out immediately
after he does both.

5.) Use an odor neutralizer, such as a product called “Nature’s Miracle”
(you can buy this at your local pet store, or through a mail order catalog.)
You’ll need to make sure that whatever product you’re using is an enzymatic
cleaner, meaning that it actually ‘breaks down’ the urine or fecal mater on
a microscopic level, rather than just masking the scent.

I have had puppies and worked full time. Here’s what I’ve done. Used basically the above method except during the work week (school week for you), I put the crate inside an ex-pen (you can order one on line very reasonably through PetEdge) with the crate door open. I covered a large area with newspapers, but pee pads would work also. The set up was in the kitchen because accidents are easy to clean up there. When I got home, I’d take the pup outside immediately and then clean up any accidents and take up the newspaper and put the set up away until the next morning. When I was home, we went outside on a regular schedule and this includes during the night for at least the first few weeks.

Have your pup sleep in her/his crate next to your bed at least until it’s crate trained and sleeping through the night. After that whether or not it sould sleep in bed with you depends on several factors including your desires and, more importantly, whether or not the dog proves to have a dominant personality and whether or not s/he challenges your leadership.
