POTTY TRAINING PIT BULL PUPPY HELP!!?
I have a 4 month old pit bull. we have only had her for two weeks, i have potty trained many dogs but she is by far the hardest, she is making no progress. I take her out at least once an hour and always when she first wakes up from a nap, sometimes she will go and sometimes it takes up to 45 minutes of walking around before i get tired and bring her in and the second we get in she pees or craps on the carpet. I have tried the paper towel thing, whenever she pees soak up what you can with a paper towel and put them outside where you want her to go. Nothing is working for me, Im definately struggling with her any advice?
Being firm and consistent with her is key. Pit bulls aren’t like other breeds in that, while they are willing to do ANYTHING to please their owners, they will also walk all over them if allowed to. These are not dogs for all first timers, by any means.
That being said, pick one method and stick with it, don’t change methods as you could confuse her, which will, in the end, make the process longer and harder on both of you.
Next, when she DOES go potty outside, have a mini party. Make a HUGE deal out of it, give her all kinds of attention, affection, etc… The bigger deal you make out of it, the better. And ignore the crazy looks you will probably get from the neighbors and anyone walking by your house, lol.
The paper towel thing can work, but also do the same when she does #2 in the house. The more of her own scent she has outside, the better.
Get her on a set feeding schedule. Feed her the same amount at the same time, every single day. Do not free feed her as this can mess up this procedure. Wait about half an hour to an hour after she eats, then take her outside. If and when she goes potty, proceed with the mini party.
While you’re outside with her, unless she’s done her business, don’t get her too excited, don’t play with her too much, etc… at least not until she’s fully house trained. This can distract her, which could be why she’s not going outside. It’s kind of like potty training a human child. If they get too distracted, they can forget to go when they need to. The same can be said for a puppy. If she’s getting too distracted while she’s outside, she may “forget” to go potty, which is why she would do so in the house right when she comes in.
Also, keep in mind that she’s already 4 months old, and you’ve only had her for two weeks. She’s still settling into her new environment and getting used to how things work in your home. House training any dog doesn’t happen overnight, especially with a puppy that’s in a new home. Best of luck, and I hope this helps!!
