How to stop my puppy from biting?
My puppy is currently 3 months 14 days old. I tried to train him but, he get more aggressive every time. He would stop biting me when i just trained him. But after few minutes his habit came back again. I really don’t what to do. Is his mouth itchy or something? I have tried many ways to stop his habit. I even tried to put cloth tied with knot and put it into the freezer and let him bite after few hours. Still, nothing works. help me !!
Puppies use their teeth and mouths to investigate and chew objects. This is a very normal puppy process that can develop into rougher play as the time passes if they are not taught that this is not appropriate behavior.
When the puppy bites you or chews on something they shouldn’t give them a toy or chewy treat in replace. This teaches the puppy that they should be chewing on this.
Time outs, if the puppy bites during play ignore them or leave the room for 30-60secs. Then come back and continue play. If they bite again you ignore again or leave the room. This teaches the puppy that play only continues if they play “nice”
Some puppies will bite when they are being pet. Distract the puppy when you are petting them using your other hand by hold a treat or a toy.
Avoid rough play, play fighting, batting their mouths, and wrestling. All of these play behaviors encourage biting and can also lead to more aggressive behaviors.
Socialization. Puppies learn a lot from other puppies. This is a very important step in the development of any puppy.
Bite Inhibition – most puppies learn this through their littermates and other puppies during these puppy stages.. but some do not learn this or are taking away from their mothers to early. You can teach this yourself. Encourage the puppy to bite by playing with your hands. Once your puppy bites you hard make a high pitched yelp and have your hand go limp. Then remove your hand after he/she looks startled and looks at you. Ignore the puppy for about 10-20secs. If the puppy continues the mouthing, get up and walk away giving the puppy a time out for 20-30secs.
After ignoring the puppy return to playing the same as before. This encourages the puppy that if. they are gentle in play the play continues. If the puppy bites hard repeat with the yelp, go limp and ignore process. Continue the process a few times each day to teach the bite inhibition. It may take a few weeks. Be patience and consistence.
