When housebreaking a new puppy, i have always used the method of putting this face in an accident (pee, not poo) to show him that it was wrong, an then taking him to the correct location. Giving praise when he goes where i want and verbally scolding accidents, (in addition to putting his nose in the pee) This has always been an effective method and i`ve had good results. Now i see several people here and on a couple of websites state that you should never do that. I`m assuming that if the time tested method has been abandoned, then a new, and more effective training method must have been discovered. Could someone please explain to me what this new better method is? I`ve never had a problem with the old method, but if something else works quicker or better, i`d love to hear about it. Thank you.

Placing a dogs face into it’s excrement does not train them. They do not understand that what they did was wrong, all they understand is that you are pushing them into it’s own urine and are mad at them. They dont understand that they are getting punished because they went to the bathroom in the wrong location. Dogs minds dont work like that.

The best method (in my opinion) is to kennel train your pups. Buy two seperate kennels (your pups need to have their own “private” space) of the appropriete size for your two pups. You can place a little bed, some toys, etc… in their for your pups.
Whenever you can not watch the pups, or when you go to sleep place the pups in their kennels. They’ll whine at first, but they’ll get used to it after a while. Once you can again watch them take them out of their kennels and immediately outside to relieve themselves. Stay outside until they’ve done their business and when they have praise them for all your worth.

The best way that you will be able to house train them is if you have them on scheduled feeding and watering times. This way you can get an approximate routine with when they go to the bathroom, when they eat, etc…

Chihuahuas can be harder to housebreak, well atleast take longer to housebreak, like quite a few small breeds. But, be patient and keep up with kennel training, even if it gets frustrating.

The idea behind kennel training is that a dog is not going to want to go to the bathroom in the place where they are sleeping and spending time in. So, they are not going to go to the bathroom in their crates.
