Training a 6 week old puppy?

We have a new puppy, mix between a Chinese Crested and a Bichon. He is actually quite cute, and yes he has lots of hair lol even though he’s part Chinese Crested. Anyways, what age can you really start training a dog? I take him out in my front yard and back, and down the sidewalk without a leash to train him to stay with me, which is what I did with my first dog who we still have. She is 9 years old and a great dog. But we got her when she was a few months old. Not 6 weeks.

When can I start training him? Is 6 weeks too early?

Start today : )

By 12 weeks my pups know sit, down, stay, and can walk on a leash.

Your puppy is like a little sponge right now and is very capable of absorbing a lot of information. Just keep the training sessions short, about 15 minutes each with 30 minute or longer breaks in between.

Best things to work on besides leash walking? In this order of priority, this is what I do:

Housetraining

Crate training-right now work on making the crate positive. You can keep it in your bed room.

Come

Play retrieve (Fetch, bring it to me, drop it)

Down

Sit

Stays

Chinese crested can be difficult to house train, so get a schedule started right away. You should have a pretty willing dog who is capable of being trained.

Look into puppy classes at a reputable training facility to help you with distractions (very important) and some socialization. Just make sure that the puppy class has a good obedience curriculum too.
