I have a new lab puppy 10 weeks old black and continues to bite at all! Any advice for training?
My dog is 10 weeks old and a black labrador. He keeps biting everyone really hard. Not like regular puppy bites, real aggressive biting. I understand it is a puppy, and I wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions for training. Thanks!
In 10 weeks of age, would be very unusual for a dog that behaves aggressively. It sounds as if it's just fall into the habit very common puppy mouthing and biting! Although this is normal puppy behavior is annoying and painful surprise, and something that definitely needs to stop. If you are consistent in your corrections, which decrease the pinch, and eventually grow out of it, but now you need to let you know this is not acceptable. There is aggressive behavior, but can sometimes be considered a play for dominance, and is designed to attract your attention. Therefore, the first thing to do is remove your attention from him as soon as it begins to bite. Tell him "Oh, NO!" loudly and firmly. Then cross your arms, avoid eye contact, turn your back on him if you can, and ignore him for a while. If you still biting you, cross your arms (to your arms hanging and hands do not tempt him!) and foot. Repeat this every time begins to bite. Puppies learn through association, and once that starts to bite associated with loss of attention, do not stop in time. If, after a week or so, this does not work, or your dog begins to fall into their old habits, try spraying the hands, arms, pants cuffs, shoelaces, etc. with Bitter Apple. Most puppies will hate the taste and introduction in the mouth. For stubborn persistent bite yet "cease and desist" you can use a small spray bottle with water or a breath freshener spray to stop on your way.
