I’m getting a new puppy this weekend. What do I need to know?

My family of 4 of us mom, dad, myself, and my brother (we are 24 & 22) have just a adopted a terrier. He is going to be traveling from Kentucky to Connecticut where we will pick him up Saturday morning. Our previous dog Schooze had to be put to sleep in March at the age of 12 (so it’s bittersweet because I miss him). What are some things we need to know? What should we bring for the 2 hr ride home after we get him besides water? The dog we previously have was never trained properly (he was still jumping at people in his old age and he was a big dog so we rarely had company over and when we did we would have to put him away). The dog we are getting will be 6-7 months old neutered and up to date on shots.

As others have stated, a blanket or a towel. I would suggest bringing at least 2 though because dogs who’re not used to car rides (and even some who’ve been in cars often) get car sick and vomit and if that happens, you don’t want him laying in a dirty towel. Also bring paper towel to clean up in case this happens.

Bring a dog bowl and water…or if you don’t want to carry water, you can just get a $1 bottle at any convenience store. I wouldn’t bring any food because that might add to the throwing up or having to go potty. Bring a leash and a coller just in case the puppy does need to be walked before you get home and if that’s the case, try to stop in a town…not a rest stop.

I would say bring a toy or a chewy to keep him occupied but he might be very mellow from the flight and new surroundings. Use this time to just bond and comfort him…keep him on your lap, let him lay down…pet and praise him. Don’t do a lot of passing back and forth.
