Training Older Dogs: Jack Russell Terrier Training Tips

Jack russell terrier training is not only for pups. Dogs, young and old alike, are capable of grasping new lessons and tricks taught to them. Many can even surpass the expectation of their owners as long as they receive appropriate training.

Since they’re less excitable, energetic and curious, older dogs have better attention span as compared to young puppies. So this means to say, they’re able to give attention to training better than puppies do. Additionally, a lot of dogs for adoption are already trained by either their past owners or shelter volunteers hence they only need refinement of the lessons they learned earlier.

Jack russell terrier training for older dogs is pretty much the same as training younger ones. But when training an older dog, it is important that you consider the pet’s physical capacities to figure out what approach is right for that particular dog. The breed may be known for being healthy but old age could potentially cause eye disorders such as cataracts and glaucoma and muskuloskeletal problems like patellar luxation and arthritis. Hence, it is a good idea to regulate training activities in order to stop the disease from progressing.

Have patience when dealing with an old dog especially the one that has been passed from one owner to another. This kind of dog is often nervous, timid or submissive hence requires longer time to socialize. You also have to be exceptionally gentle with him but not to the point of allowing him to escape from the mistakes he did. Watch over him constantly so that you’ll be able to give correction the moment you catch him in the act of doing something undesirable.

Just like training other dog breeds, successful jack russell terrier training can be achieved through patience, consistency and determination. Expecting or forcing your pet to learn commands at first try will give you nothing but frustration.
