Puppy Training Helpful Hints

Does anyone have some helpful hints for training a pit bull puppy? I need serious help with her!?

My boyfriend surprised me with a pit bull puppy. I love her to death. She’s sooo sweet & adorable. My only concerns with her is she’s way to hyper & chews on everything. She’s 8 months old so I figured by now, she shouldn’t be destroying EVERYTHING! Does anyone have some advice to train her to break her of the chewing and hyperness?

You need to get a crate. When you can’t watch her, crate her. Our two year old female still chews, but only on the proper things. They are chew machines, it comes with the breed at any time. When she is out with, make sure all shoes are in the closet with the door closed. We told our sons – if you lose it, it’s your fault for having it out. Keep toys handy, including a few up on the entertainment center that she can’t reach. If she chews on anything inappropriate, clap loudly and say “EH!” (like a game show buzzer), remove it from her mouth and place one of the toys she hasn’t seen in her mouth to chew on. As she chews on it, praise her.

NO cooked bones. They could kill her. Raw marrow bones once a week outside, but remove it after a few hours and throw it in the trash.

Bullysticks a few times a week. Compressed rawhides only.

None of my bullies have ever liked the same toys, it’s odd. My male loves, loves, loves to chew on rubber tires so I buy those at Pet Co or Walmart. He also is obsessed with Nylabones (the big ones). Our puppy loves to pull the stuffing out of toys until she gets to the squeeker. It will be hit and miss until you find the colors and toys that they like. Then stock up.

Call your local pit bull rescue or shelter to find out about FREE training classes too. In an effort to keep more dogs in the home and keep from killing so many pit bulls every day in the shelters, most communities are now offering FREE training classes to pit bull owners.

Here is a GREAT website where you can get more advice:

Make sure she’s getting enough exercise. She’ll need two walks a day. We do an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. They’re a high energy breed and require that much. A good dog is a TIRED dog and a tired dog is a happy owner! This will also cut down on the chewing tremendously. When she’s asleep, she won’t have the energy to chew.

Congratulations on your new baby!
