Does anyone know how to housetrain a dog that used to be housetrained?
My dog was completely housetrained before we moved from Hawaii to North Carolina. Now he poops or pees at least once in the house one time a day. I cannot seem to break him of this habit. He never used the puppy pads and still will not. I have tried the sprays the trainers at the pet stores recommended. He does not do this while we are home either. It is only when we are gone at work. Crate training isn’t an option either. He has a dog door and plenty of space outside. I cannot lock him outside as it is getting cold. Any suggestions on what to do?
Take him for regular, long (at least 30 minute) walks every day, morning and evening. Praise him whenever he “goes” outside. Also, did you ever work on training him to tolerate a crate? Give his favorite treats while in it, and provide a comfy bed to lie on with familiar smells, a shirt of yours, for example? Also, let him spend plenty of time in it with the door open, until he gets used to thinking of it as the house of good treats.
This worked for our rescued beagle-mix, who was four when we got her. Before that, we’d shoo her out the back door or take her for too-short walks, and were continually surprised by her pooping or peeing in the house. Consistency is key.
Good luck!
