Golden Retriever Puppy Training Tips: Socialization

Socialization is one of the most significant parts of golden retriever puppy training particularly if the pup is expected to work for a certain role like guide dog for the blind or to get involved in search and rescue operations. The primary purpose of socialization is to introduce or expose your canine friend to various new experiences so that he will be able to learn how to respond correctly to different circumstances particularly fearful and critical ones.

It may appear so simple but socialization is one thing you ought not neglect for it is the exact thing that will greatly impact your dog’s future. To socialize your dog appropriately, below are great tips you might want to consider:

  • Socialization must take place if the puppy is about three to 12 weeks of age because it is during this age when pups are usually responsive to new things taught to them.
  • Get your puppy accustomed to being stroked, brushed, bathed and groomed in addition to various training instruments like crate, collar, leash and others.
  • Make sure to move slow in completing the task. Introduce things, places and people one at a time so as not to overwhelm or threaten your young pup.
  • Introduce him first to things, places and people he is more likely to come across with in his later life – delivery guy, garbage truck, members of your family, other household pets, vet, grooming expert and others.
  • Consult your vet’s advice prior to taking your dog out. Completing his shots before you go out with him prevents contagious diseases such as parvovirus and others. Your local veterinarian is aware of what vaccinations are required in your area so it really helps to check him out.
  • Allow him to meet friendly and vaccinated dogs and other animals. Meeting other dogs and animals for the first time is among the significant turning points of your pups life so make the experience positive and worthwhile.

Golden retrievers are kind, friendly and confident dog breed but can become shy or aggressive with not enough proper socialization. Just like any other dog training lesson, the sessions should be made into positive experiences for them to become really confident and well socialized dogs all set to face the world.
