Puppy Barking is a Puppy’s Way of Communicating
Puppy barking is perfectly natural for canines. Be prepared for puppy barking, whining and howling when you bring them home as it is what they do! If you are one devoted dog owner, you’ll know you will experience barking, whining and howling at any time. It would be totally impossible and unfair to wish to train your puppy to stop barking at all. It is best for all, including your dog, if the barking can be controlled.
Here are the Reasons for Why Barking Begins
Dogs that do not get a lot of socializing or that are spending most of their time alone need something to do to spend all that saved up energy. If there is nobody with your dog all day, then they may bark just to hear itself and nobody tells them to stop. Before you know it, your dog will be barking just because it is fun. Many dogs, once they start barking, do it because they think it’s fun and enjoyable.
You may have trained your dog to bark too much by accident. You always obey when you hear your dog speak. When the dog barks, you let him out. When he barks again, you let him back in. A puppy quickly learns that barking earns him a snack; they bark and they get rewarded. Puppy barking gets your attention and so they easily fall into this trap because the very nature of it gets your attention and they get what they want. And sometimes, it is very easy to forget to provide positive reinforcement such as praises and treats for your dog when they are not barking.
Barking and Exercises
If you want to reduce the amount your puppy barks and give yourself, your household, and your neighbors a little peace, it is important that you understand why your puppy barks. Usually a puppy will bark because it is afraid, bored, lonely, or frustrated. Behavioral problems are usually alleviated when you are spending more time with your new puppy. If your puppy is happy, contented and adequately exercised, he will probably spend the day napping when you are not at home. Try to take the time to give your puppy exercise, playtime, and proper training.
Puppy obedience training is as tiresome a mental exercise for dogs as it is for humans. Dogs love to learn tricks like “sit”, “stay”, and “come here”, but you can mix it up by also giving love hugs, massage, praise and goodies. Try to think of new training ideas for your puppy so it won’t get bored.
Dogs that live in a backyard also need some socializing time. To keep the puppy barking to a minimum, it may be necessary to take them on a walk. Daily walks will be an adventure for them to investigate and find out about those sounds and smells that excite them while they are in the yard. Running around the yard like a crazy dog is a normal thing for a dog or puppy to do, but it does not count as puppy exercise. Just like humans, they pace, fidget, and have other nervous tendencies. Give your puppies fun things to play with and occupy themselves with such as chew toys for puppy biting and a digging pit for dogs.
Dogs are very sociable. They are just like us. They need companions and friends. Your dog needs to be taken for walks and exercised every day or every week as well as to let them socialize with other dogs. Romping, playing, and dog training together all day will tire them out easily and will help them sleep happily while recovering from the hard play and great exercise session.
