anyone know really effective methods of how to train a 3 year old labrador?
scooby is the most clumsy and adorable lab there is. we rescued him when he was 2 as his previous owners were leaving the country and wanted to have him put down. however, they didnt train him as a puppy so he is a bit naughty sometimes. the main problem with him is that if we accidentally leave the gate open or if he finds some way to escape the house he runs away and we have to use the car to catch him. i live in dubai, which has crazy roads, so im afraid he might get run over, my question is, how do i train him to stay? and not run away? i dont think itll work because hess passed the training stage, but anything suggested will be worth a try.thanks.
hes neutered
He hasn’t passed the training stage – there is no truth to the saying that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks! It just takes a little longer to train an adult than a puppy, that’s all.
Is he neutered? Entire (non-castrated) males are much more inclined to roam great distances in search of a female – neutered males tend to be happier sticking near home. Some dogs, however, are just great escape artists, and if you have one of these then you just need to be more vigilant when it comes to keeping the gates closed. Maybe he could have a secure run/pen to play in when you cannot supervise him?
Are there any dog trainers near you? Training classes would be good for both of you – and give you much needed confidence that you can get this dog to listen to you! If not, invest in a clicker and a book on basic clicker training – it is easy, effective and utterly addictive. The dog learns that the noise of the click is the signal that he is doing the right thing – so getting the timing of the reward right is much easier.
Good luck.
