What’s Challenging About Having A Job – The People!

Unless you are in solitary confinement, your job will bring you into direct contact with other human beings. And do you realize what’s alarming about dealing with people? The service the client gets relies on the mood we’re in that day.

Allow me to hit you with an illustration: give me a call on a day when my hair-do plays nice and I don’t have to pop the clutch to get my car running, and I’m all “Thank you for phoning Violet’s Vinyl Roofing! Allow us to return your car or truck top to its initial bumpy goodness!” Sickening, I realize. On the flip side, give me a call on a day when my  precious  6 year old lets loose with a melt down insisting on wearing his pj’s and cowboy  boots to school and you’re likely to get “Vinyl roof covering is for AUTO ROOFS!!! What kind of *&^%$ idiot wants to put it on their house?!!!”

Phone me on Friday after lunch:  “Harriet’s House of Hair. Absolutely! I’m able to squeeze you in this afternoon. Come on over sweetie and we will fix you right up.” But phone me Monday morning before I’ve had my coffee: “Harriet’s House of Hair. You’re getting married so you need to have your hair styled? Isn’t that just peachy. I wouldn’t invest too much cash. You realize it won’t last. He’s more than likely already sleeping with somebody else. How is Wednesday at three?”

Good thing I’m not employed in the emergency room. At the beginning of my shift, I am going to try everything within my power in order to save your ninety-seven year-old grand father who just got hammered by a locomotive. Find me toward the end of my work day, before I’m departing for my holiday cruise trip, and I get a real bad case of blinders for the most critical cases.

Our disposition influences whether we view our work place as enjoyable, or simply hell with fluorescent lighting. Surprisingly, the amount we accomplish is correlated with our mood and how we deal with our customers. Sure, that’s normal motivational speaker fodder, but it is still true. Nevertheless, how many individuals permit what is happening on any given day have an effect on how they will feel. I’m not really overdoing it when I say that most people sit on their hands hoping that a white knight will come and clean up their problems, and that scenario determines if they are content or not. There’ll always be difficult people, change, and tension. Don’t let your life pass you by as you wait on outside factors to make you content. It’s your responsibility to manage your mood. End of story. The choice is yours to decide whether you consider your work fun, or the third ring of hell. Your fulfillment hinges on it.
