Invisible Dog Fence. After reading up on this and purchasing one, I have questions from a more experienced tr?
We live in TN and the ground is just now thawing out. We put the wire above ground as it was frozen to start to train her. The “PetSafe” fence is very inconsistent…I painfully tested with my hand. It is a very hard shock and my puppy is only 6 month old. In the back yard we are separated by a barbed wire fence which I swiveled the invisible wire around (not sure if that was not such a good idea).
While trianing her today sometimes it would warn ME, with it in my hand, and sometimes I could walk right over the line. She got shocked while on my leash with no warning 2x. I took it off her and now don’t have any idea why this is not working and hurting my dog.
Questions:
Is the weather a factor? (There is NO mention in the instructions about this)
Because she is just a puppy (pit) and not too much hair, is that a factor?
Is the above ground temorary method not a good idea, should we wait until the ground is not frozen to bury?
Thank you in advance.
The barbed wire CAN interfere with the signal The TRAINING is crucial when using an underground fence. The VISIBLE barrier must be much more defined than what the KIT allows. The flags should be no more than 1 foot apart in the beginning. You can buy extras at Lowes, Home Depot, Tractor Supply, etc. I wouldn’t be REAL concerned about the warning tone….if she’s properly trained, she won’t go anywhere near it. Most people make the mistake of not being hard enough on the dog early on. It must be absolutely clear that crossing the line is not an option. If the collar is set to low, and the dog manages to get through one time, your job has just increased 10 fold. I’m hoping you got the “contain & train” kit? It would also have a remote that you can activate yourself. In this case, you can set flags anywhere, and work on the training end of it. I can train a dog at the kennel, and set up flags anywhere afterward without concern of them crossing the line.
