I dont know what to do about our puppy toddler situation?
My son is 2 yrs old. I have a step son (8 yrs) and a step daughter (4 yrs). My step kids only come every other weekend, but they are already attached to this puppy we have had for about 3 weeks.
My main concern about the puppy is my son half the time is too rough with the puppy. (Bassett Hound 2 months old) And have caught the puppy nipping at my sons face once. Also, the puppy plays rough and half the time wont let my son walk by without biting his pants leg or whatever he can. My son may whine when the puppy is getting too rough, so I separate the two. But as soon as he stops whining he goes right back to the puppy and it starts all over again! I feel like I cant rest a wink til my son and puppy are both sleeping lol!
Also, the puppy wont use his training pads while we are at work for number 2… Thats a whole diff story. lol
Any advice? Thanks in advance!
Small children under the age of 6 or if the child is simply small you need to get the right kind of dog. A spaniel is a good choice for a small child.
Here is my memory of a dog I had when I was very little; At age 3 – 6 we had this blood hound that was as rough as could be, I was small for my age and I was easily knocked down by this monster of a dog.
So the breed of dog for small children should be taken into consideration.
A word of warning tiny dogs like Toy poodles and Teacup poodle, chihuahua and any dog that size will get injured easily.
Maybe for the next month you should keep the dog away from your youngest and as the dog matures he/she will slow down a bit. Let the 8 yr old hang with the dog and when the 4 yr old wants to play with him supervise the play time keeping it to a limit… Remember the dog is a baby too and is only 8 weeks old.
