Train a dog to sit, lay down, and stay?

I just adopted a little 5 month old pitbull puppy, and she’s very attentive and sweet, but unfortunately, has not been trained well. I have been researching techniques to get her to listen better, but apart from “hold a treat in front of her and give it when she sits” i have not gotten any real advice. She seems to not understand the concept whatsoever. What’s the best way to teach her basic obedience? Any advice will be appreciated!

OKAY, you can read all of the advice that you want & people can copy & paste advice to you all they like. BUT I adopted a 4 year Westie about 3-4 months ago now. He wasn’t trained at all either. I have trained my doggie to sit & down. It is all about consistency. I live in a unit so what I was doing was whenever I was taking him out to the toilet, when we got back that’s when I was doing the training. Dogs are very treat motivated so make sure you have lots of treats. I found that rather than pushing down the bum, I would just tap it with one finger & eventually he got it! He eventually also knew when he was coming inside that it was training time! You just have to be persistent & paient! The dog will eventually get it! Don’t give in though with a treat cause then he won’t learn!!

Good luck & Merry Christmas!
