If you’ve been wondering precisely how to clicker train a puppy, then you need to read this. Learn about these critical mistakes first, before you perform a clicker training session with your beloved puppy.
Recently, my cousin’s puppy came inches away from ending up in dog heaven. See, my cousin was conducting a clicker training session with her puppy, Tulip when the tragedy nearly occurred.
See, at the time, she was initiating a clicker behavior fluency training on her puppy. For your info, this particular training process is designed to shape new behaviors in puppies. The aim is to make the puppies perform a particular action automatically, without having to offer treat bribes.
My cousin and I learned about this training process from a downloadable clicker training manual which you can find out more at the end of this warning announcement.
Anyway, to make a long story short, my cousin mistimed his clicks during fluency training and the puppy somehow ran across the road and was nearly fleeced by a fast moving car!
So to ensure the same does not happen when you’re figuring out how to clicker train a puppy, please take note of these mistakes.
Mistake 1: Not working on your clicking skills first! Mistimed clicks may lead to tragedy so be careful. To better your clicking skills, I recommend you learn to use the clicker with both hands.
Mistake 2: Not charging the clicker before training. With a properly charged clicker, you can make your puppy react positively to the sound of the clicks very quickly. Typically within 10 or so clicks!
Mistake 3: Using inadequate training materials. It’s difficult to clicker train your puppy using inadequate training references. I’ve found a number of courses on how to clicker train a puppy – most of which do not provide a solid scientific outline of the clicker training principles and most importantly, they lacked precise step-by-step instructions!
