Lab Puppy Training Timeline

Timeline and order for training?

In what order and timeline do you think is appropriate for training an average yellow lab puppy? He’s 8 weeks and knows sit and lay. What should come after that? I want him to eventually know every trick in the book. Any advice or orders in which I should start?

I would work on the important commands and focus on THOSE the most. While speak, shake, and roll over may be FUN they don’t really have a purpose and should be sprinkled in with commands that could save your dogs life.

Commands EVERY dog should know:
- Sit
- Down
- Stay
- Come
- Drop It
- Leave It
- Heel
- STOP (learned this in advanced class – gets dog to stop immediately and stay in that position… very helpful if dog is bolting into the road.)

Important Behaviors
- Walking nicely on a leash
- No jumping on guests or owners
- Proper greeting of other dogs (no pouncing, jumping, nipping)

Fun Stuff
- Roll over
- Play dead
- Shake
- Speak
- Go get
- Go touch
- Dance

I would look into enrolling into a group obedience program after your pup has had all of his shots. This will offer the pup some safe socialization and play time with other pups/dogs and will give you the help of a trainer if needed. They’re also really fun and give you lots of good tips!
