XIII (thirteen) is a Franco Belgian comics series written and drawn by the Belgian Jean Van Hamme and William Vance, which revolves around an amnesiac protagonist trying to discover his hidden past. With its plot inspired by the book by Robert Ludlum The Bourne Identity, [1] XIII was originally published in 1984 in Spirou, and was later published by Dargaud. In 2003, the story of the first five volumes was adapted into a video game also titled XIII, which was released on multiple platforms. A television miniseries starring Val Kilmer and Stephen Dorff XIII was released in 2008.
Only the first three volumes were translated into English in early 1989 by Catalan Communications. In 2005, Alias Comics started to publish a monthly comic book published for the U.S. public, but stopped after five issues. In 2007, Dabel Brothers Productions in association with Marvel Comics published censorship Volume XIII 1 TP collection of the first three albums, and previously released the # 6 online for free. [2] below are the titles of English translations of the original securities, and may be modified for as long as real albums released in English.

XIII chronicles the adventures of a man, nicknamed "XIII", with memory loss who is looking for his past, and a group of friends who are trying to unravel the mystery of his identity, which is embroiled in the conspiracies, secrets, and murderers who are out to kill him.
[Edit] Volumes 1-5
The series begins with a man is hanging on a coast in the Bay of peacock on the East Coast of the United States suffer from amnesia, and only tattoo "XIII" in the clavicle link it to its past. The volumes of 1 to 5 deal with 'XIII' in search of his identity and his past, only to find himself facing the "conspiracy of XX ", pointing to a coup in the United States. They form a closed arc, ending with the destruction of the" XX. "
In the first volume, XIII washed ashore and soon finds himself chased by murderers, for reasons unknown to him. Manages to escape from them and collect a photograph of himself in the company A woman, developed by a photo shop in the city of Eastown. XIII comes to Eastown, where he identifies the woman in the photograph as Kim Rowland, widow of Captain U.S. Army Steve Rowland. Go to the direction of Kim Rowland, XIII is a hidden message left by Kim saying that someone nicknamed "the Mongoose" has found a record of it and wait for XIII ", where the Indian is." Once again chased by murderers, XIII is rescued by Colonel Amos, a government agent investigating the assassination of U.S. President William Sheridan. Colonel Amos has a video showing XIII kill the President and you are sure that they have caught the murderer, but still unaware of his true identity. XIII escapes, and its implementation, faces the Mongoose, the head of the murderers of game XIII.
In the second volume, search Kim Rowland XIII to lead to his capture by the army of General Carrington, who identifies himself as Steve Rowland XIII, the husband of Kim Rowland and former member of a special operation unit called SPADS (Special Assault and destruction of the sections) Carrington created and sent to Rowland was allegedly killed in a helicopter crash two years before. "Rowland" is returned to his home in Southbourg by Carrington's assistant, Lieutenant Jones. While his father, Jeremie Rowland, owner of a rich soil, and other relatives did not express doubts about his identity, XIII is disappointed not to find Kim there. But as XIII amnesia prevents him from being of any use to find who has sponsored the killing of Sheridan, Amos XIII can go for Kim Rowland because as she goes down, he suspects that she knows something important. XIII, finally manages to find "where the Indian is, but is deceived by Jeremie Rowland young wife Felicity. Felicity kills Jeremie Rowland and Uncle Steve, Matt, implying XIII for the killings, in order to inherit the fortune of Jeremy. XIII, however escapes from police Lt. Carrington and help of Jones, and meets with Kim in hiding. Kim reveals she is tattooed, and the use of the tattoo number XVII, which she does not know the real name of XIII, which is in fact no Steve Rowland. Kim disappears XIII is arrested by the police, tried and convicted for the murder of the Rowlands, and sentenced to maximum security prison.
The third volume XIII in an institution for the criminally insane. Meanwhile, Colonel Amos, pursuing their research, they begin to realize that XIII is not Steve Rowland, but two Sometimes on a body. Volume four begins with the conclusion that Colonel Amos Carrington Tanner invented identity, and suspicion he's part of the conspiracy to assassinate President Sheridan. XIII, under the name of Ross Tanner, Carrington has been hidden for a training center in the country SPADS San Miguel fictional. Following verification of files, Colonel Amos believes that the tomb of a fly Jason was actually the body of the real Captain Steve Rowland, not die in a helicopter crash two years earlier, but by bullets, shortly after the assassination of President Sheridan. Assuming now that Rowland was the real murderer, Amos is confused about the real role XIII, but the judge sets Allenby, who once found a body in a helicopter crash as that of Rowland and is now head of the investigation as one of the conspirators, who wore the number VI. Allenby Amos calls the name of the First Number of the conspiracy, but Allenby is killed by a murderer Mongoose's who is about to kill Amos when he is shot by Kim Rowland. Meanwhile, a woman named Betty reveals Sergeant SPADS Barnowsky XIII she has seen once in Eastown Steve Rowland after his supposed death in helicopter crash in the company of Colonel Seymour SPADS Mac Call, thus exposed as a member of the conspiracy. XIII, and Jones Barnowsky escape an assassination attempt by Colonel Mac Call, but end up lost in the jungle of San Miguel.
Kim Rowland Amos was FBI director Carl Heidegger and General Carrington, who revealed that after faking his own death in the helicopter crash, contact Steve Rowland and his wife Kim, and had his member of the conspiracy. Kim, who do not share the ideology of the conspiracy and herself a former agent of the FBI, secretly warned his former chief of Heidegger, it was, but could not prevent the assassination of President Sheridan. Steve Rowland was shot in the Mongoose to end all investigations to uncover the conspiracy, but escaped severely wounded and died shortly after telling Kim what happened. Heidegger and Carrington then came up with a plan to the conspiracy of the XX I Steve Rowland had survived to bring the murderers Mongoose, hoping to arrest and traced the conspirators. Jason had became a double fly Steve Rowland, but soon after his death (which was shot at this point lost his memory, where the story begins.) Kim Rowland is also revealed is the daughter of Carrington.
At first of five volumes, XIII, Jones and Marquis Barnowsky Préseau kidnapping a rich landowner, to steal jet to fly back to the U.S.. Meanwhile, Carrington and Heidegger have been arrested by the conspirators, as they prepare to take over the country during a military exercise large scale. XIII and women meet with Colonel Amos, puts them in contact with Walter Sheridan, the brother of assassinated President William Sheridan and the candidate for president.
Sheridan helps XIII infiltrate the military center of operations, and together with President Galbrain manage to put an end to the conspiracy at the last minute. The entire plot, with the exception of the illustrious Number I, has been killed or captured. Walter Sheridan was elected president. Kim Rowland is still missing for unknown reasons. At the end of the story arc XIII believes she has found her old identity as Jason Fly, and is ready to continue their lives normally, even if their memories have not returned.

In the following volumes XIII shows the investigation into his past. Volumes XIII bring six seven Greenfalls, a snowy town in the Rocky Mountains, where the story revolves around the fate of his father in 1950 McCarthian. XIII learns that his father, Jonathan Fly, was killed by the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, after they discovered the true identity of Fly's was Jonathan Mac Lane, a "red" journalist who had to flee after suffering under McCarthy's witch hunt. The tracks still Mongoose XIII with the blessing of the murderers of Jonathan MacLane, but evades XIII hunting of man, is made justice for the murder of his father and he manages to stop the Mongoose, which shows that number was in the boat when I fired the bullet that was amnesiac XIII, but ends no information about I. After trying to free a Rowland Kim island which is believed kidnapped, XIII and Jones, along with Kim, they fall under the Mongoose, which is on the yacht of Sheridan, and explodes. XIII manages to rescue Jones alone, and Kim Rowland is lost and presumed dead.
XIII finally confronts Walter Sheridan, exposed as Number I, but not XIII no evidence or witness against him. Sheridan did not try to kill XIII to prevent new research that could lead to expose him, and XIII and Jones leave the country.

In the following volumes of the action takes place in and around the Costa Verde, a fictional small nation in Central America, where he XIII to believe that once led a revolution in the identity of "The breakers", but the breakers reportedly killed. XIII is involved with the revolutionary Mary de los Santos, who claims to have been his wife. During the episode 10, after freeing from prison of which he was on death row, it was confirmed her husband.
During the revolution XIII met Irish-American expatriate Mullway Sean, who claims to be the true father of XIII. However, also confirms the identity of XIII Mac Jason Lane of Irish history reveals XIII and XIII learns that his mother was the sister of Giordino, who accidentally killed. The Giordino is revealed as a mafia family. At the end of the volume XIII was offered an amnesty by the U.S. ambassador, who explains that help is needed XIII: Carrington has apparently gone mad.
In twelve volume XIII, the corrupt American President is kidnapped by General Carrington Sheridan has learned that Sheridan ordered the death of his daughter Kim. Carrington and Amos XIII and Jones have captured the Mongoose for more evidence against Sheridan. In a TV show "trial" Sheridan is revealed to the American public as the conspirator with the Mongoose XIII and testify. In the aftermath of the event the director of the NSA Giordino accidentally kills Sheridan Sheridan has been killed after the Mongoose.
Volume thirteen (XIII) is a special problem, in which two journalists retrace the first twelve issues, clarify and expand the story.

While in exile in Costa Verde, XIII and his father decided Mullway attempt to find treasure hidden somewhere in Mexico for their ancestors. Giordino, meanwhile, manufactures XIII revealing evidence as Seamus O'Neill, an IRA agent who trained under Fidel Castro. Like O'Neill, XIII is wanted by the U.S., but again manages to escape. It also survives a murder by Irina Svetlanov, who has taken over Operation Mongoose is. After many setbacks the treasure is found, then lost again. Meanwhile Giordino is finally withdrawn from service by the new President, has received evidence of the thirteenth and Giordino Mullway revealing not only connected to the mafia, but also as the real murderer of Walter Sheridan.
eighteen and nineteen volumes are the latest albums written by Van Hamme. Volume Eighteen Irish version was drawn by Jean Giraud aka Moebius. [3] figures as a story within the story, and is cited as part of the plot in The Last Round nineteen volumes. This is the prequel story arc Initial history, and finally resolve all the mysteries surrounding the identity of XIII.

For the first time in 1984 as a series in the popular Belgian magazine Spirou, XIII was an instant hit among readers of Spirou. The first three episodes were released as a single hardcover volume by Dargaud the same year, a trend later issues. At the time of the eighth edition, thirteen against one of hardback sales had reached 140,000 copies, and the publisher belatedly realized they had a hit on their hands. Promoting begin including a special design by the French national lottery in 2000 with 1.5 million tickets and a € 13,000 prize tail.

Also published in Spirou was the series of Soda on a New York police. An adventure published in 1999, Dieu seul sait it (only God Knows), also has the titular character losing his memory, but not for long. References to the number "13" and other serial connections appear throughout history.
The Black Cat manga, first published in 2000, has many similarities to the XIII. The main character, train Heartnet, is known as Chronos Number XIII in his work as a sweeper or a murderer. Rail fails a mission-like fashion identity Bourne ends in conflict with Cronos, and must stop a massive conspiracy.

Originally in French, XIII was simultaneously translated into Dutch, and translations into other languages like German, Polish and Italian came quickly.

- In 1989, XIII was first released in English as Code XIII, but after the first three volumes, Publication ended in 1990 when the editor (Catalan / ComCat) went out of business.
- In 2005, Alias Comics started publishing the title as a monthly series of comics published 32 pages for U.S. audiences. Five songs were released, but was 6 # "Cancelled by the editor" in February 2006. [4] Each subject covered half of an album.
- In 2006, the series was Dabel Brothers Productions. They launched the line # 6 for free, and the first volume of 144 pages was published on February 7, 2007 with Marvel Comics, reprinting the first three discs.
- Cinebook have decided dispatch all the series in English, and plans to publish 19 books, at a rate of one every two months, from August 2010. [5]

- In 1988, XIII was first published in Portugal Meribérica-Liber. The first three volumes were published over a period of two years, and the series returned in 1997 with their fourth album, after a hiatus of seven years. Meribérica published the first nine albums until it ceased operations in 2004.
- In 1990, the Portuguese newspaper Public (Portugal) started publishing XIII in its Sunday supplement 'audience Junior'. Finally, the first 3 books were published in this way before 'Public Junior' was suspended in 1992.
- In 2006, XIII published in Brazil by Panini Comics. [6] Panini XIII publishes a monthly series, with two episodes in each issue. Previously available in Brazilian Portuguese editions were published by Meribérica-Liber.
The first edition of Day of Black Sun was named O Dia do Sol Black, the literal translation. The first issue also includes a second episode, called Onde Vai or Indian … (In the case of India hikes), published in May 2006. All numbers in Brazil consist of two discs, with the exception of question 7, which includes the original volume XIII, a double album of size alone.

Jean Van Hamme has stated that it will continue writing the series, but William Vance is interested in continuing with another writer. Yves Sente, which has already taken over writing Thorgal Van Hamme, is interested in continue the series. He was contacted by William Vance and said he would propose a story that Van Hamme, but no agreement has been reached yet. [9]

A separate comic series called Mystery XIII, which continues and deepens some of the supporting characters from the comic series XIII, started by the publisher Dargaud October 3, 2008 with the launch of the first issue, the mongoose.
