chihuahua owners: what did you do when you brought your chihuahua puppy home in terms of training?

did you start training her on the first day (potty training and teaching her/him tricks?

did you let him/her sleep in your bed or put him/her in a crate?

how much time did you take off work to devote to your chi, and how long can your chi now cope away from you, and how do you keep your chi’s occupied when your gone. also, where do you leave your chi when you go out to work etc, (in a crate, small area, free run of the house?) and has it turned out ok?

thanks in advance!!

Yes, you should start potty training right away. If she is nippy as most puppies are… make sure they know not to bite you by saying OUCH so they associate their action with you not being happy and not a game.

Crate training is the best aid in potty training… but remember a young puppy can only hold it for so long so frequent trips out are essential. Otherwise, if she starts going in the crate it will be much harder.

Its best to never give them free run of the house unless you know they know where to go. You want to set them up for success. Once your dog is potty trained you can let them sleep with you if you want and then have fun teaching them tricks. Remember chihuahuas may be small but they too need obedience training. Recall is something every dog should know and will be very important in the event she gets loose.

Positive, reward based training is always the best way to go as you’d never want your dog to fear you.

I recommend reading ‘Chihuahuas for Dummies’ it gives lots of good practical information and is a very easy read.

Good luck and enjoy your puppy!
