Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot…?
Anyone have any SAFE tips on working with a dog who is already a runner, to make them walk loose-leash.
I am aware that this is something that I should have worked on from puppy-hood…but where do I even begin?
My dog has already matured and has already accomplished quite a bit in her short 2 years here on this earth, so she has already ‘learned how to learn’
She catches on quickly. I have never had to work on something for longer than 10 minutes with her in order for her to understand and obey what I am asking of her.
I can usually figure out a solution to any dog issue but this one has me stumped, as I dont want to take the chance of having my dog or anyone else in harms way.
I have taught her the words “follow me” as well as stay, and we have practiced them inside AND outside, but in the privacy of our own back yard. How can I safely take that and use it outside of my own property??
Try taking your dog to a different enclosed area. Like your parents or a friends house.
Your dogs attention will be on all of the new scents and surroundings, making it challenging for you to keep your dogs attention. Continue to find new and different ENCLOSED areas, so that you and your dog are safe.
You are right. Its best to work with your dog when he/she is a pup.
When we automatically teach our pups to walk on a leash..they are confined, and they want to explore, making their odds much higher to run away if they get out the front door or off their leash. Because they have never been off-leash, and its super exciting to them
If you train your pup to walk by your side from a puppy..not only will it make it much easier, since pups tend to follow their owners EVERYWHERE when they are that young, but also..being off leash..they will have no excitement, as they are already used to it.
Somebody else mentioned to visit a dog park early or late, and so long as your dog is people/pet friendly..this is a very good suggestion. It allows you to practise and perfect.
The best of luck to you and your pooch!!
