labrador puppy training: he won’t go to the toilet on walks?

I have chocolate labrador puppy, he is three and a half months old. He walks really well on the lead, doesn’t pull, stays to heel, sits automatically at curbs. Could not be a better dog. But he has never been to the toilet on a walk. He is toilet trained and never goes in the house. After we return from a walk he will go outside into the garden to his usual spot and do his business. And ideas how I can encourage him to do it on our walks. I’ve tried taking him out first thing in the morning, he just waits until we get back.

Dogs Are creatures of habit and your pup is used to going in a certain spot and probably a certain surface (i.e. grass). One thing you can do is teach him to go on command. You do this by associating a word or phrase with the act (I use ‘get busy”). When he starts to do his business just repeat the phrase/word over and over until he finishes, then praise and treat. After you’ve done this several, at least 5-6 times, start giving your go potty command before he actually starts doing his business (as well as keep repeating during) when he starts sniffing or circling. Sooner or later he’ll associate your word or phrase with the action and will do his business on command.

As far as doing business on walks, start out by walking to one spot and waiting there until he goes (take a book or something if necessary LOL) then giving him high value, yummy treats and lots of praise.

Count yourself lucky, your pup sounds pretty amazing for one so young.
