My Dog is puppy pad trained . But i want her to go outside what should i do ? (she wont go outside)?
everytime we go for a walk she just acts nuts and happy but as soon as i bring her inside she goes straight for the pad… i really want her to go outside cause puppy pads are not cheap …..
First, I’m assuming that your dog is an adult, not a puppy. Please correct me if I’m wrong!
I don’t have a specific time frame on when your dog will be housetrained. Every dog is different, but it’s never too late to start!
You need to decide if you want your dog to ALWAYS use the bathroom outside or ALWAYS go inside on the training pads. You can’t do both. That will just confuse her. If you do both, she will think that if she can’t get to the training pads in time, it’s ok to go anywhere in the house which includes your carpet and I don’t think you want that!!
I NEVER recommend using newspapers or puppy training pads. Your dog is an adult (If I’m correct.) and she needs to learn that the only place that it’s ok to relieve herself is outside and outside only. Using puppy pads etc, will only delay the housetraining process. It will just confuse her.
Your dog doesn’t have a small bladder anymore, like eight week old puppies, so she should be able to hold it for at least four hours. Even though she is an adult dog you have to anticipate for her on when she needs to go outside to relieve herself. (Since she is still in the learning process.) Take your dog outside when she wakes up, after she has had a meal and when she starts to sniff around and circle a certain spot. (Sniffing and circling is a definite sign that she is looking for a place to relieve herself.) After she has relieved herself outside, say “Good Girl” and give her a treat. You won’t have to use treats forever, but you will have to use them in the beginning. Make sure you have small, healthy, treats so your dog is less likely to get fat for getting a treat every single time she goes outside. You can slowly wean her off the treats when she is ready. To wean her off of the treats, you can simply “forget” to give her a treat and just praise her profusely. Once she learns that she only gets a treat every once in a while she will soon stop expecting them and you can take them away completely.
Remember, NEVER EVER use physical punishment on your dog if she has an accident. Using the ancient “rub his nose in it” method is just plain cruel and it won’t teach your dog anything.
