Is a crate or a gated space best for this puppy when I have a weird schedule?
I don’t mind crate training, but I have a weird schedule because I take classes and work a part time job. So two days I might be gone from 9am to 10pm. My mom is usually home by 5. I would HATE to use a crate on those type of days where I won’t be home to let him out.
I have a space that I can use as a gated off area. There are hard floors in the laundry room, right next door to my room. Problem is, it’s in the basement in a dark, quiet place and it might make him feel extremely lonely. There are some spiders back there too. What would be best?
The BEST thing for the pup is to definitely NOT leave him in a crate for such a long period of time. This can not only be hard on their psyche, but on their baby blatter, their bone development, etc. You should create a small, cozy, gated area with a secure place they can eliminate: newspapers, sod. And place the crate inside the area with the door open so they can sleep inside, but not be stuck. Leave some toys with treats inside of them to preoccupy his time, turn a fan on and possibly a radio-but not too loud since dogs hearing is much more sensitive than our own.
But even though you may have the perfect space to keep a pup for a long period of time, they still need human interaction and if you’re going to own a dog they need someone, YOU need someone, to check in on him and let him outside, and play with him. Its the responsible thing to do.
